“Our wee one has been attending water babies since she...”

★★★☆☆

Our wee one has been attending water babies since she was 5 months, mainly because her dad wanted an activity the two of them could do together and he liked the sound of swimming. The classes are good and he and she both really enjoy being in the water, she even enjoys the dunking, but I am not sure the classes really offer value for money. They are very expensive, especially in comparison to swim lessons at the local pool which friends who have done both actually prefer. Also find the idea that a baby or small child can learn to 'rescue' him or herself when falling in water disturbing, though of course this is not the main focus, but they are taught techniques for this which really seem a bit pointless and more for the parents - worrying, as parents should be with baby in water and should be ready to rescue said baby if needs be! We are signed on for a second term now but will not continue beyond this, and will not be having the underwater photograph taken. The costs associated with the photography session are extortionate, if we buy one small print the whole experience will set us back about £100. I'm sure the photographs would be lovely, but as every one of her class mates may have something very similar stuck on their walls at home, its all a bit uninspired for me and I'd rather have something else for the money. I am also concerned that you cannot have an electronic copy of the photography and that the originals remain the property of waterbabies. Not unusual, but makes me feel uncomfortable. My advice would for those looking for swim classes would be to check out local alternatives in the first instance and consider waterbabies as an expensive last resort.

I have had a fantastic experience with waterbabies and now have a 2 1/2 yr old who is supremely confident in the water, and can now swim a width unaided. They may be one of the more expensive baby activities but you cant put a price on a lifesaving skill, and the techniques they teach your baby re saving themselves do come in handy when they are learning to cruise, and also if accidents do happen - yes you never leave your child unattended near water, but as a friend found when you have a 2 yr old running round a holiday home who falls into water, those seconds where they are holding on to the side are valuable.
