Diana 34 classic compact
+ good looking gun in comparison with some other brake-barrel rifles;
+ excellent finish of an external surfaces;
+ T-06 trigger.
- Internal quality issues (see for details below);
- Hard to cock with a short barrel (~40cm);
- Iron sights are teerible: front shight made of plastic (fortunately I not using them).
* trigger guard is made of plastic;
* rubber buttplate;
* scope rail is 11mm wide;
* back cover of the reciever made of plastic;
* trigger is metal.
Opening the box
After extensive reading airgun forums many reports about drop in quality where found. Some guns have sharp internal edges inside reciever/cilynder: they damage piston seal (results in drop of compression and power) and cocking rod - gun may jam after several hundrets of shots. Some guns have terrible rifled barrels.
Just opened the box, I disassembled the gun and inspect all the internals. Internal edges of reciever where terrible! I fix it using sandpaper. Piston sealing was already damaged and was replaced by a new one.
Holes for the screws in wood stock (when all the mechanism is removed!) was reinforced by applying few drops of CA (aka "superglue") - this locally hardened the wood and solves problem with loosening screws while shooting.
Rifled channel isn't looks good, but after some cleaning with METAL wire brushes (manual says it's not allowed, but many airgunners report it's OK and also the only way to completely clean the barrel, if requried) pushing pellets with a rod indicates smooth movement with increase of force to the tip. Before ~10mm to the end of a barrel force drops and pellet freely goes out.
After carefully washing with "fairy" and drying, little (little!) greasing and assembling back gun starts cooking much more smothely.
Using chrono 0.547g pellets goes at very consistant 238 m\s, and 0.68g pellets at 212. A bit underpowered for this model - I think because of a damaged barrel O-ring (will fix it next time).
After zeroing the scope (maksnipe 3-12*40SF) the rifle finally releases it's potential! At ~25 meters with bad wind conditions and not very stable shooting position it makes very fine groups about 1/3inch ctc with JSB heavy! The rifle stil have no muzzle load, but groups are extremely good for a spring rifle and even can compete with some PCP rifles!
Beside the fact it look's very elegant, the rifle is big and feels heavy.
there are many China made clones of D31/D34 - they are way cheaper but after some little work inside can shoot almost like a German made one. Is there a reason to pay more?
Reasons to by Diana are - higher chances the rifle will be accurate and not broke after only few thousands of shots. But you sill need to disassemble it and check for 'bugs'.
