This player comes out of the box ready to play all of your favorite media's. I have a large library of DVD2SVCD's and most (with the exception of poor quality cd's) play beautifully on it. There are plenty of sites where you can find the hacks for macrovision and regions - ie- www.vcdhelp.com. Best of all - this thing is dirt cheap. Bought mine for $70 and have seen it for less.
Bad Points
It occasionally will make a tacking sound when watching SVCD or original DVD. I think it is caused by an off-balanced spin. A friend with the same player said that he noticed the same and was able to remedy by tightening the screws of the carriage itself (inside the player).
Also, Remote isn't the greatest - you can't turn the power off completely from it, and you have to point directly at the player for response.
General Comments
Overall, the Apex AD-1500 DVD player is cheap. There's no denying it. It looks cheap, it feels cheap, and it smells cheap; however, if you want to play all media's and regions and disable macrovision- all for some pocket change - it will work.

I love the DVD player, I got mine for $39.00, upgraded it for free. If I rent a movie and don't get a chance to watch it. I throw in a tape and make a quick copy and watch it in my spare time. Cheap yes, I love cheap.. Did I mention it works great
