Good Points

:The shots are so quiet they can't be heard at 16 yds
:Recoilless accuracy
:The metal finish is immaculate and the chequering and finish on the stock is superb.
:solidly built

Bad Points

:Needs divers tank or pump(expensive)
:The pump is the cheapest option but very hard work when it comes to pumping the rifle up after a full charge of air has been used up.-through no fault of the rifle it's self of course!
:I tried but i couldn't find anything wrong with the rifle it's self at all

General Comments

The accuracy of the Air Arms S400 Carbine .22 rifle is such that at fifty yards with a rifle clamp the S400 was putting it's diet of Air Arms Field pellets through a a hole that could easily be covered by a one pence piece.
Note:Air Arms Field are the only pellets out of the doezens of brands that i have tried, that get any where near the 12 ft lbs mark. My chronograph showed me that they were producing a rock steady 11.7 ft lbs unlike the rest of the top brands such as Crosman premiers, accupels and RWS Hobbys which were all producing around 10-10.5 ft lbs. So a warning to Air Arms pneumatic users to check that the pellets they are using are producing a suitable hunting power of at least 11.5 ft lbs. Accuracy tests showed these brands in particular to have good accuracy from the S400 but not quite at the same level as the air arms pellets.
I would recomend this rifle to anyone looking at getting a pneumatic or the S410 if you are looking at a multishot, but take in to concidderation ammo choices carefully as i found top brands to be nearly as accurate but did not seem to produce suficient muzle velocities for serious humane hunting.

I concur with the reviewers comments but would add the following.
    1. The use of a stirrup pump isn't as hard as it may seem. The S400 needs 90-100 strokes to fill it, which is a lot less than the Stealth I previously had.
    2. I've found that H&N Field and Target Trophy pellets also produce a chrono reading of 11.7 ft lbs and are just as accurate as Air Arms Field.

    There's a Grub screw on right ove action undo it and get to screw underneath turn that anti clockwise up goes power :}

    Peter,

I don't understand your comment. What do you mean by "right over action?" If you turn up the power, how many shots do you get?

    Does this tweak actually work?
AND without doing any irreversable damage?

The S400/410's are, like the S300/310's before them, adjustable for power output by means of the small grubscrew on the right hand side of the action. The grub screw partialy blocks the transfer port and restricts the ammount of air released when the trigger is pulled and the valve is momentarily opened, however, this only works up to a point and the power does not increase much above 12/ftlb if at all. It is only meant as a means of fine tuning the power output as each individual gun will vary a little. Of course there are means of increasing the output to 30/ftlb+ but this requires a degree of engineering work and does result in fewer shots being obtained from each fill. I have obtained 40+/ftlb using 30grn slugs but get few shots/fill. Swings and roundabouts really.

Being from N.I also I know what Peter is talking about, he probably has the S410E, we must have FAC s for a gun that does 2ftlb so we may as well get the high powered jobs, the extra high power model comes with a dedicated power adjuster that enables you to wind it up to just over 60ftlbs if you want, bearing in mind that at this power you are getting 8 shots per charge, I wouldnt fancy using a hills pump at that level.
My mate has tried them all and he has settled at 15ftlbs, which is more than enough for any vermin on the British Isles, the myth that power is everything is peddled by poor marksmen who need extra power to make up for ill placed shots. With any pneumatic rifle never mind an A.A you should be able to hit a crows you know whats at 50 yards.
    Happy shooting lads, Thumper.
