For an exstensive time after it was initially released, the Playstation 3 was famed for being the best console to have ever been available on the market, far exceeding the Microsoft's XBOX360. Now that I have experienced playing with the console for over a year, though, I can testify to it being much less than it should have been.
Positively, Sony can be proud of the excellent graphics performance achieved by the systems hardware as well as some of the feature improvements ontop of the Playstation 2 - inbuilt wireless, a large HDD, the ability to play Blu-Ray discs and full HD. However, all of those features correspond on the XBOX360 - wireless, a large HDD, HD and HD-DVD ability, plus upgradability to Blu-Ray - yet for a lower cost. What makes Sony's higher cost further unreasonable are the shortcomings of the console:
It's heavy - forget treating it as portable to cart to friends' houses. It's loud - the scratching of the hard disk drive is very, very irritating. It has very few games compatible with it, and the ones made exclusively for Playstation 3 are generally poor. Probably most annoying: the earlier Playstation 3s do not play Playstation One and Playstation 2 games, so I've still had to keep my Playstation 2 set-up.
Overall, the Playstation is a failure on Sony's part - avoid it and choose to buy an XBOX360.
