“Hi there! I have a unique perspective on tempur matts...”

Written on: 18/07/2010

Hi there! I have a unique perspective on tempur matts as i own one and i am also a bed salesman of 12 years experience and have seen and tried every type of mattress available. Since Tempur lauched their range in shops 10 years ago i have sold hundreds of their mattresses. And in complete honesty i have come to the following conclusions , so read on if you at all interested in one :-

1. They do not suit everybody, i would say about 15 - 20% of buyers will NEVER get used to the feel of them.

2. They are WARMER, so ladies of a certain age, people who hate warm beds AVOID! I can tell you all that even with the special breathable covers the difference is very small.

3. People with severe arthritis must always choose the thickest mattress ie:- the 25cm or celebrity , the extra soft layer cushions you that much better.

4. People who expect miracles the first night are going to be dissapointed! The people on here whining that after one or two nights they were in pain are fools. Think, all your life your body has been resting on sprung beds with a certain resistance to provide support, you take that away and it takes your body time to forget and become accustomed to the feel of the tempur. I have met people who have taken up to two months to get used to them, and believe me, most are glad they did give them time.

5. Never never never buy direct from Tempur, you WILL pay full price plus delivery, the 60 night trial is fraught with small print and catches. You Will always get a better deal from an independant.

6. Dont blame the shop if you dont like it, do you REALLY expect us to take a used mattress back, we CANNOT sell it again, and we CANNOT send it back to TEMPUR. Use a good dealer, preferably an independant, take your time and for gods sake try them in the store, the amount of people who buy them but refuse to lie on them in store never fails to amaze me, these are usually the ones who complain afterwards may i add!

7. Further to this last point, do not buy one from dreams, as an inside in the trade i know that dreams do not let their staff have any official training from tempurs reps, so basically, the poor staff have no idea what they are talking about.

8. Lastly, just because your mother/brother/dad has one and likes it doesnt mean you will, you are an individual, and it may not suit you the same

One, last point, i would say is that most people love these products, and as a store i get no more complaints on these tempur products than anyone elses make.

I found this review very helpful because... it appears to be very honest... I have just come back from Dreams and agree that the salesman did not know what he was talking about even though he claimed to have one!

I found this review very helpful because I found it to be a thorough honest opinion from someone who knows the trade inside out - what better person to offer a review.

Great review. I do have a question to ask... I have asked many sales people here in Australia about why the tempur seems to generate alot of heat and they always say its supposed to draw the heat away from the sleeper. but i trully dont find that to be the case. I normally dont over heat whilst sleeping but i have since having a tempur. We were offered a refund due to a faulty mattress but thought i might do some research before i make my decision. Hoping you can help

Hi ramata. The heat issue is a big deal on this type of product. The reps i deal with would say that because circulation is improved, your body becomes warmer, but i think this is just a salesmans answer to give an angle that wont impede a possible sale.

Personally i think the answer is simple. There is a foam element to all these tempur matts, and foam is often used as an insulator to trap heat, hence the extra heat people feel.

I would say you have to way up the benifits against the disadvantages. Can you put up with the warmth in return for what is probably the most supportive mattress available. If you cant, then invest in as good a pocket sprung mattress or maybe latex (pure) as you can afford.

We didn't have a Tempur mattress, but we did have a memory foam topper for a few months and the biggest problem is the heat. In the end we got rid of it because we couldn't sleep, even in the winter. We do often sleep with just a sheet on and have the window open all year so it may suit peopel who like to feel warm in bed.

I found your review really interesting and honest. We've recently bought a memory foam mattress from Ergoflex which is a similar quality to Tempur but at a reduced price. I understand that I have to give it time to adjust to the mattress, but I am finding it too hot. We have tried a mattress protector with Outlast and also CoolMax fitted sheets, but they do not seem to be making much difference as you said in your review. We are now not sure what to do. Could buying a non memory foam topper be the answer? I would appreciate your advice. Thanks very much.

I found this review very helpful because...it's to the point and doesn't wax lyrical about the mattress. It seems an honest review, pleased he mentioned about Tempur, price etc. as I was thinking about the trial of 60 days.

Helo again, i didnt realise i'd get this much feedback on my review but i'm glad its helped. To Jkimperato i'm afraid that in my experience toppers make little or no difference, a feather topper will literally double the heat you feel already so please, dont go there! Possibly, just possibly a man-made fibre topper may ease the heat as these breathe far better these days ( i recommend the fine quality bedding Co perfect comfort mattress topper).. good luck

Hi Thanks for review, we've just bought a tempur mattress and I did expect to have the most wonderful first night sleep, that didn't happen both mine and my husbands back felt terrible. Second night same thing. After reading your review I know to give it a while. We both like the feel of it and the aches don't last all day it just gets to about 3am and we become uncomfortable. We will perservere

I live in Worcester and went to a big shop there near the bus station. The guy really knew about beds to have an intelligent conversation with me about them. I tried to catch him out but he knew. I am 6 ft 2 inches tall and about 15 stone (about 100 kg) and of all of the beds in the shop (pocket sprungs, dunpillo, vi-spring, etc., the only one that worked for me was the 25 Tempur. What I observed is that one can sleep on a long thin strip on the edge of the mattress, so that if your kids and wife get into the King bed and you are forced to sleep "on the edge" you can do that in a 25 Tempur but not on any other bed. I was very disappointed with all of these British pocket sprung ones. The best alternative I would say is an ortho firm mattress from Taurus, now in Finchley road, I have had this mattress for 20 years (the King) and if you change them every five years you cannot go wrong (I have owned three get the red and white stripes version and the firm). They are not pocket sprung but they are brilliant if your budget is limited.

Good to read these points. I've had a Tempur for about 4 years now - I did my research, took my time in the shop and gave myself time to get properly used to it (about 2 weeks). I have noticed a reduction in back pain over these years which is great ... BUT ...It is so, so warm which is driving me crazy! I've passed that "certain age" but the mattress makes me feel like I'm still going through it! None of my research revealed this particular point but then maybe I should have expected it given the material it's made from. I love my mattress but I think I'm going to have to get rid of it, simply because it makes me so hot. During the day I do a lot of hard physical work and need my sleep - but it's just too hot.....
