I've been with BT for over two years now and even though I only get 8mb instead of the 20mb (only people in London get 20mb), the service has been reliable, the speed stays consistent all day and only once did the speed reduce but an engineer managed to fix the problem in 2 days. As BT controls all the telephone lines (orange, o2 etc use BT exchanges) line problems will occur whatever ISP you use.
BT do offer their customers discounts at the end of their contracts, I've been given broadband option 3 for 15.49 for 12 months instead of the usual 24.99.
On value for money they are not so good. Be warned that the numbers on the adverts are marketing gimicks (there is no such thing as unlimited broadband (it's capped at 100GB/month)). On option 1 10GB may sound like a lot but most people who surf at home on evenings and weekends can use up to 5GB per week/per person. BT will charge you £1/Gb you use over the limit. I got fined over £30 pound unexpectedly as they give you no warnings once you have gone over your limit, you need to monitor yourself.

5Gb per weekend! You only use this kind of data if you are downloading a lot of video and music. As you get iPlayer and all the catch up TV through the TV package this doesn't come out of your data.

<br/>You also get a warning by e-mail if you get to 9Gb.
