This novel is based on real life characters and the destructive energies of drink and drugs . I admired it for its ambitious , intellectual and playful sketches of city life . Viola's figures , have their own fantastic substance and the Dickensian regalement of their trials and tribulations contribute to the humour , sex and violence of this story . At the core a tale of debauchery , disintergration and a divided London .
