I get the impression that Feria (or, I suppose, any permanent hair colour) works better on virgin hair. My hair is naturally dark brown and was dyed a black-brown three months ago to cover a bad home-dye job that turned my hair a brassy red (especially at the roots).

After three months of giving my hair a break from chemicals (and letting the dark dye color fade) I wanted a slightly lighter, warmer color change form my flat dark brown hair. I would have preferred to have a salon job done, but being a student, I cannot afford the $150+ for professional colouring. (Although I personally believe it's worth it). This time, I chose L'Oreal Feria# 59 Hot Toffee (Rich Golden Brown). The color on the box is a warm, golden brown and I hoped it would just add warmth to my dull brown hair. Realistically, I didn't expect my hair to match the proposed after-colour as indicated on the box.

For a drugstore box colour, I found it a little expensive at $15.81CDN. Still, one box of colour was enough to saturate the entire length of my hair -- which happens to be several inches below my shoulders, or breast length. The process was simple and straightforward, however the experience is something left to be desired. I can say that the "beauty is pain" mantra rings true here. I coloured my hair in a well ventilated room and had a fan going to help diffuse the chemical smell. Nonetheless, it still had an overpowering odor and made my eyes water. Also, it was stinging my scalp a bit, but I am VAIN so I stuck it out. If anything, to see the results!

The results produced BRIGHT ORANGE roots (on my virgin hair) and the rest of my hair remains not unlike it's original color. What a waste!

I would not recommend this to anyone with naturally dark hair that has also been previously colour treated.

Off to the salon I go(to get this mess undone)!
