Good Points

Good looking set, good features and excellent picture quality. Sound is good too.


Bad Points

Although picture quality is good, alignment is absolutely terrible!


General Comments

Set is a 6 month old Philips 32PW9545 100Hz Widescreen. Was initially impressed until I noticed the alignment or geometry was poor. When watching a dvd for instance e.g. Gladiator (2:35:1 ratio) which didn't fill the screen top and bottom the bottom third of the picture bowed downwards at each side. COMET Service Engineer came out and adjusted it but it was no better. Got them out again, slightly better but still not right. Came out again tried adjusting it yet again and gave up and took the tv in for repair. TV came back after allegedly having a new tube fitted but now it bows downwards top left corner, upwards bottom right corner and at either side about one third from top and bottom of the screen the picture bows towards the middle, like a sort of mouth shape. They've got their last chance this Tuesday or it's going back! I've persevered so long because I really like the set and hoped they would sort it out, still enough is enough!

    For picture tube problem like alignment geometry, most Philips TV have a hidden menu to perform it using the remote control. You get access to the controls that is available in PC digital monitor. You can adjust the vertical alignment and geometry besides the usual size, position, parabola, trapezium, horizontal bow, etc.

    The other common problem of colour misalignment and horizontal convergence due to picture gun incorrectly adjusted, the only solution is for a skilled technician to open up the cover and manually re-adjust the picture yoke, gun voltage, etc. with precision tools and instrument CAUTION: this can only be done by skilled technician. It is also very dangerous because of the high voltage inside the TV. DO NOT EXPERIMENT inside a TV. Send it to a good well-equiped and experienced technician, or back to the manufacturer's factory for them to find out why this unit got passed their Quality Control checks.
