I used Norton products starting at a time when they came on floppy discs. I used them first when they took over another firm producing a much better set of utilities than they had, then closed it down so just Norton was left. I used a disk imaging product, yes they did it again! This was the way to gobble up the firms with good products and use there ideas into your products. BUT in doing this they created bloat ware riddled with bugs and hogging every PC resource they could get at.
After many years using other firms products I read that Norton internet/anti virus had seen the light and produced a set or programs that, by today's standards, were small and low on resources. As the product I was using had developed into the reveres I gave NIS 2009 a go.
It installed easily, it has a very large set of updates to down load as part of this, but every such program appears to need this now! My boot up was much faster than with the old programs on and resources do appear to be much less used.
BUT there are so things to watch out for, there are options hidden in settings that many users may well need to look at, for example the Windows Mail anti spam filter is for most of us very good so the (probably better but extra)Norton one really isn't needed for most Windows Mail users. For those that love fiddling with rules etc this isn't for you, its mainly aimed at out of box use and as such has worked well.
It has now been updated to 2010 which has some improvements but has grown in size a but so I hope there isn't to be return to the old days of bloating programs again.
Two last points
Don't buy the product or renewals on Norton's web site. They are much more costly than sellers like Amazon for a renewal buy a new product and install it the day your licance runs out (one of the nasty Norton tricks is its not just updates that stop at the end of your licance the product stops working as well).
There is no manual, help files are there but no replacement for one in some cases. There is a very useful forum to use if you have problems and will keep you informed of updates etc.
