I'm subscribed to the Unlimited/Max package and get at very, very best just under 8mbps and that's between 11pm and probably about 11am. From that time onwards it steadily declines until 6pm when it hits rock bottom and speeds of around 50kbps (download). My old BT dial-up was faster and more constant than this 10 years ago! I can't see the point in this ridiculous fluctuation of speeds and it is a wonder Sky have any customers at all.
The UK government needs to take a leaf out of some other countries books and do more to provide free and fast internet for every corner of the country. It is a staple of modern life in the realms of education, business and entertainment. Also it will put an end to the crimes commited by the con-men at Sky.
Anyone looking to subscribe to a broadband service, my advice is this... there are other ISP's out there who can give you more bang for your buck thank Sky can, that's for sure.
