In the year 2007 50 Cent's "Curtis" went head to head with Kanye West's "Graduation" which resulted in one of the biggest weeks in hip hop. The insuing competition resulted in only the second time ever that two albums sold more than 600,000 in one week in the United States. However this time 50 Cent has no competition whether it's lyrical or sales figures.
50 Cent is indeed back to take the crown of gangster rap. His new album "Before I Self Destruct" is like a gangster version of Eminem's "Relapse". Dr. Dre contributes some real bangers with "Psycho" and "Crime Wave" standing out from the rest. "Psycho" features a killer verse from Eminem, but 50 sets the tone on the dark and brewing chorus. This is without a doubt Fiddy's return to his hard-core gangster stylings which made him famous on "Get Rich or Die Tryin".
The majority of the production is slick sounding with many new wave sounds and effects like in "Hold Me Down" or the heavy dark synths in "Gangster's Delight". Then there's the stand-out upbeat vibe of "Do You Think About Me", which is refreshing since the majority of the album is mostly dark and gangster.
Surprisingly "Could've Been You" a supposedly leaked track from Dr. Dre's anticipated "Detox" finishes the album off with a good feeling leading us to want "Detox" even more.
All in all "BISD" delivers in every aspect Fiddy has promised us. It's grittier, darker and more street than all of his previous albums, which is a good thing if you've been waiting for that clever psycho to let loose which has always been brewing inside of him.
