Good Points

I am pleased with the price point on this product, Also the BNR filter allowing for picture adjustment. The Surround feature is nice if the unit is wired directly into the TV unit.

Bad Points

The unit is not very intuitive to setup in the onboard menu. I have tried to set it 5.1 and my reveiver is still not getting the signal. I think this has some thing to do with the built in surround features, need to do more research.

General Comments

I have a Sony DSP-935 receiver and Bose am-10 speakers. The DVP-NS400D dvd player is hooked up via S-Video and Optical Audio. For some reason, now matter what way I set the dvd player features, the Dolby-5.1 light never lights up on the receiver. I had an earlier DVP-300 DVD unit and this was never a problem. It died last week and the warranty replaced it with the DVP-NS400D.

You're right. It has to do with decoder built in DVD. In that case, the DVD is the one who decodes audio 5.1 signal, not the receiver. (DVP-300 is without Dolby Digital decoder.) You have to disable decoder somehow.
Try to link DVD and receiver via 5.1 analog chinc audio.

Check my review for details on how I solved a similar sounding audio output problem. Hope it helps
