I had pre-paid for my booking online and chose to pay a bit more for a better car. When I arrived at Picardy Place in Edinburgh to collect the car I was told that they didn't have the better car available and I would have to take a basic model. They told me that they couldn't refund me the extra I had paid as I had paid in advance!!! It later transpired the car's headlights didn't work. When I returned the car and explained this to them they claimed that I had broken the lights and that they still wouldn't give me a refund despite the fact the car was not roadworthy! They then tried to claim that the petrol tank wasn't full and they were going to charge me £16 to top it up.
Overall this was the worst car hire experience I have ever had. Do not use Hertz.
