This was our third cruise with Royal Caribbean, previously having sailed on Voyager and Splendour. The staff were extremely friendly and we could not fault the service in all areas of the trip. However, the ship was full and it was difficult to find a seat in any of the bars after dinner if you were on the second sitting. The entertainement was patchy; ice show very good, 2 funny comedians and 1 who was universally considered to be awful. Mid week production show was poor however the others were much better. Our junior suite was bigger than on the previous ships. The worst aspect was arriving in Madeira. Due to the port renovations, it was chaotic getting onto the shuttle (for which there was a charge) We were forced to queue in the full sun, with 7 coaches expelling their fumes onto us while they kept the engines running for the airconditioning. We waitied for 30 minutes to be then told that it was a plesant 20 minute wwalk into the town centre and we could have a refund on the shuttle costs. Royal Caribbean say it was out of their control, but arranging for coaches to park with the exhausts pointing in the other direction would have been a simple solution! The food was good, but the portion sizes seem to have shrunk, although you could always ask for more. The Independence of the seas probably suits families better than couples and given the size of it, it is hard to find a quiet spot. But the staff certainly make up for any shortcomings.
