I feel so strongly about this company that it has caused me to sign up to this site to let others learn from my misfortune.
Aviva is one of the two worst companies I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. I would be here all day if I described all my grievances, so here are a few.
I was rear ended by a van whilst stationary at a roundabout. The 3rd party was uninsured and gave false details, though I had the license plate number. They supposedly ran a DVLA check, though I have my suspicions as their story was contradicted every time I called. They were unable to trace the vehicle and driver. I was put on to DriveAssyst for a hire car and assured I would not have to pay. I even said, "What, even if they turn out to be uninsured"?
It was 8+ weeks before the claim was "settled" and the car written-off, partly because the assigned engineer went on holiday and they didn't assign it to someone else.
Next thing I know I'm being invoiced for £100's for the hire car. Fortunately I had legal cover and they traced the owner from a DVLA check without any issues and the hire car was resolved, but no thanks to NU/Aviva. This went on for over a year causing great anxiety.
Two years later it has come to light that they still have me recorded as "at fault". After another 2 hours on the phone they say this is now sorted out.
Last Summer Bank Holiday I was hit by a car 150 miles from home (another write-off) whilst loaded up with kids, dog and camping gear. I was refused a hire car because I didn't have both parts (I had the card) of my license with me. I was told I would have to get a train!!! I was also told no hire car company would give me a car without both parts of the license. A kind policeman drove us to Manchester Airport where we hired a car from Avis with no problems at all, except for the extra expense to me.
The staff are often rude and have no idea what they are talking about. Off-shore call centres just compound the problem.
They also only provide 5+ years NCD, so despite having 9+ years I am forced to pay much more than I should be when transferring away from them.
To cap it all they end every call with "Is there anything else I can help you with?"
It would be nice if they could help me with anything at all!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
