Software and hardware compatability
Unreliable. Inferior desktop design.
I used Windows 98 for quite a few years and was quite happy with it. Then I tried linux and found out what I was missing. I still use Win 98 for some very specialist physics modelling software which only runs on MSwindows, but every time I use it, I'm frustated by regular system crashes and repeated reboots.
On the subjective side, the windows desktop lacks many of the great features of modern Linux desktops, like multiple workspaces and unlimited keybindings. Although there is far more commercial software available for win98 (it's only good point in my opinion), nearly everything you need is available for linux, only free and open-source.
Given that Linux is available free (if you've the time and net-connection) or very cheaply as a complete distibution, Windows98 doesn't seem like very good value for money.
