A word of warning to future clients of Virgin Holidays;

One year ago today, I was holidaying at Crystal Cove Hotel, St James, Barbados, a hotel which is part of the Elegant Hotel Group.

I was sitting on the balcony outside my room while waiting for a call from the UK .When the phone rang, in my hurry to answer it, I literally walked through the large glass patio door. The glass smashed easily into shards. I am a 48 year old woman, 5'2" tall and a UK dress size 8 and the distance I had to travel from the chair to the glass door was only a few feet. A child could easily have done the same sliding on a wet marble floor.

I sustained serious wounds to my shoulders, arms and had a deep muscle wound to my left thigh. Despite being in shock I managed to call for help, by the time it arrived the room was covered in blood and I needed immediate medical attention. It took three days of medical attention before I could get a 'fit to fly' certificate to allow me to return home and a further two and a half months to fully recover. I was also told I would be met at the airport by a Virgin representative with a wheelchair to help make my time at the airport less stressful. There was no one there aware of my situation.

I will try to explain Virgin's response as concisely as possible. On my return I was asked to submit an incident report which I did. In addition to my account, I suggested Virgin should warn, particularly families with children, of the dangers of the lack of safety glass. The next letter I received was from their lawyer stating all future correspondence should not go to Virgin Holidays but directly to them.

Virgin Holidays continue to deny all responsibility, which means as a client of virgin they do not care about your safety.

In conclusion I suggest if you choose to travel with Virgin Holidays do not be complacent ,make sure your hotel has safety glass if not find out if there is an excellent hospital nearby.
