Expert tailoring is something every gentleman should experience. I was most to surprised to read the negative reviews on this site about King & Allen, so as a gentleman myself, I thought I would post my excellent experience with this company in order to add some balance to the story.
I was amazed to read one complaint which stated that after their second fitting, they were still extremely disappointed with the outcome, but bought it anyway. More the fool you! Surely the point of personalised tailoring is to not purchase until you are certain it is designed to your exact specifications. I would demand nothing less if was spending close £1,400!
Needless to say, my experience was much more satisfying. Far from being a hindrance, I thought the fitting area in one of London's oldest pubs actually added to the experience. My tailor was charming and offered me a selections of fabrics at all price levels. I was clearly up sold to the expensive material. I'd like to think it was because he could sense my expensive tastes, but something tells me he had swallowed a sale manual before I had entered. However, at no point was he pushy or aggressive.
He scurried around me with his measuring tape, making polite conversation or dropping the occasional 'yes sir', or 'certainly sir' as he went. On asking me 'which side I dressed' (I've always wanted to be asked that) he politely negotiated my testicles with the accuracy of an Olympic archer. It was a hot day and he was a braver man than me to have ventured under my arms after a long day in the office.
2 weeks later my suit was ready for a second fitting. It already looked and felt fantastic. Some minor tweaks were required but the shape of the suit and the design was exactly how I had asked. If it wasn't I would have told them so and expected better results. My previous tailor was absent, presumably because he knew I was coming, but my new tailor was politely deferential and professional, with the unique ability to make me feel like Winston Churchill and Daniel Craig morphed into one.
2 weeks after that and my final fitting proved to be the last one required. Everything was perfect. The cut was fantastic and the finish top notch. It wasn't quite Saville Row but neither am I. If I could have afforded and expected that level of tailoring I wouldn't have typed 'cheap bespoke tailoring' into Google. At the first proper wear, a wedding in London, I was proposition by more girls than I care to remember, purely based on the lines of my suit. I even got my initials embroided into the lining free of charge which lead to further swoons from impressionable, albeit rather intoxicated young ladies.
Thanks King&Allen. I will, and indeed have, been back for more.
