I think German Shepherds are distinctive in terms of their attachment and loyalty to their owners. We have only had two, but with both I was acutely aware of feeling protected and safe with them. Although neither of them were aggressive in any way, I sensed that they were assessing anyone who was a stranger, e.g. anyone who even looked at me when I was walking them. I have learned from my mistakes in terms of not socalising one of them enough with children and adults when he was younger, so he would get quite excited and want to be dominant with certain visitors. I tried to train my visitors but this is not the way it should be! Anyone who was too exciting or over friendly with one of them would have to endure an embarassing dominant display of macho behaviour. Being clear about who was boss in the house seemed to work best. I am awestruck by the caretaking instinct of this dog. Whenever someone younger, a teenager or child came to stay, we became invisible, and the dogs seemed obsessed with where they were (e.g. anxiously waiting for them to get up in the morning, rushing past us to try and get upstairs to wait outside the visitors room until they rose). We have just lost our second German Shepherd, and we feel truly lost. I didnt realise how safe I felt with this dog until now. We have never been without dogs, but there is something special about the GSD in this regard. I get upset that so many people view them with suspicion, and as someone who is about to begin the process of assessment to foster children, I am anxious that our choice of pet will be viewed negatively.
