I had to use first call twice during my policy. Once in Wales my car would not start, which turned out to be a problem with the alternator. The man they sent out arrived fairly quickly (about half an hour) and fixed me up fine.

The second time I was on the side of the dual carriageway after my thermometer went way up and the 'STOP' light on the dashboard came on. After being told it would be around a 45 minute wait, I was waiting for just under three hours. When the man arrived, the engine had cooled, he checked fluid levels (which were fine) and told me to carry on driving and keep an eye on it and said he wouldn't tow me.

In the three hours I was waiting it took first call two phone calls from me and three from my mother to actually phone the garage and check they had the fax (first call did not even confirm with them that they had the job to begin with) turns out the garages fax machine was broken and they knew nothing about my problem, once they did, it took them 15 mins to get to me.

After some extremely agitated letters were sent their way, first call did pay me compensation for the hours I missed at work and my inconvenience.

First call are reckless in their customer service and do not seem to care if the mechanic actually reaches you or not. Keep looking.
