stephenwinter's Review of HTC Magic

- Value for money

I have had the HTC Magic for 3 months now. Long enough to really assess it's strengths and weaknesses. Like many I decided to try something different from the iPhone (of which was my previous phone). Unfortunately that has turned out to be a big long term mistake (Stuck in an 18 month contract). Sure the Anadroid powered HTC has some good features, it is just not a patch on the iPhone, especially its user interface (UI).
Firstly the good point. Google integration - I just love the mail and calender. It is great to be able to share your calender. There are also some good Apps out there on Google Marketplace, but still missing the big ones that you can download for the iPhone. I miss the Sky news, Sky+ and Facebook apps that the iphone has. Sure there are Android alternatives but they are light years behind the Apples counterparts. Now for the "issues" -- The touch screen is just not responsive enough, it lags, stutters and judders when scrolling, really poor and annoying after a while. The keyboard input is too slow with you having to wait typing while the phone catches up!. The predictive text is not a patch on the iPhone. Photo gallery is almost unusable. I bought a 16Gb memory card thinking it would give me iPhone type storage, but when you have lots of photos on this it just takes forever to load them. Also a massive miss is the ability to double tap and "pinch", this just make the iPhones gallery and web browsing experience so much better and easier to use. Hopefully some things will improve with future updates, but in it's current form the HTC Magic is very disappointing for me. The iPhone is a very expensive commitment on a contract but is simply so much better - You get what you pay for in this case - Oh Yes, anyone want a HTC Magic going cheap?

on 22nd Nov 2009With regard to you 'pinch to zoom' comment, have you considered/tried 'rooting' your Magic?
Makes a world of difference and will take, maybe, half an hour first time. After that, if you go the cyanogen route ( pun not intended ) you can update over the air to the latest modded roms.

Thanks for a detailed review on HTC Magic. It looks like a very good smartphone that can be compared with others. Great features but I guess the price would be a little turn off.
