    Diamond are my first insurer

If I could give Diamond Car Insurance no stars, I would!
I originally chose Diamond because I had a reasonable quote (£900 for a 19-year-old female on a 1.1l Fiat Seicento) and called them to put the policy through. I was insuring myself, my 27-year-old partner who has advanced driving qualifications, his father, and my mother. None of us have had a claim or a conviction in the last five years.
By the time the initial phone call had ended, the cost of the policy had gone up to £1300 for a ten-month accelerated NCB plan. I felt that I was pushed into buying extras I didn't need. Being self-employed, I went for the pay monthly option.
Five months later, and I've decided to change my bank account to a different bank, due to poor service. I switched the direct debits over, but for some reason the car insurance one was not changed, and therefore Diamond were not paid.
The next I heard of it was a threatening letter dated 16/9 yesterday morning (22/9/09) demanding payment of £836 by the 26th, otherwise they would cancel my policy. My partner called them to explain the mistake, to make a payment for this month, and to ask them to set the direct debit up using the correct bank details. Could they do it? No. They wanted a fax from the bank admitting liability for the mistake, by tomorrow, and then they'd think about reinstating the direct debit. They would not accept proof that the funds were available at the time, and they were completely uncooperative and unsympathetic. They stated that I would have to find the money or have the policy cancelled. Where EXACTLY anyone is supposed to find £850 from in three days, I don't know.
As a result, I've decided to pay the £200ish it's going to cost me to cancel the policy, and go with a decent insurer.
