We just took a "Tour of France" with Cosmos. This was my third visit to France. Liked: Tour guide, driver and the tour bus were excellent. The hotels were good, some centrally located or at least near public transportation and clean. The optional excursions were great. In 14 days we saw almost whole of France, even though some visits were brief. Main attractions were great. Quaint small towns, and natural beauty. La Rochelle, Nice, Monte Carlo, northern Coast are great. Bad: Even though Cosmos is great, France is way overrated as a tourist destination. Food is terrible even if you paid $100+ for a meal per person. Rotten eggs in salads costing $20+, flies in sandwiches, questionable meat in some dishes. Crepes taste like dry leather. In short what you heard of French cuisine is simply hype, most food you get at cafes are not even edible or for human consumption (Believe me most at the tour felt the same). French are the rudest people in the world. It took us an hour and a half to find the right exit door to meet our shuttle in Paris Airport (De Gaulle), because all the signs were in French and if you asked for help from airport personnel they would simply yell at you in French. Single information desk had snake lines. Throughout France, bathrooms are mostly filthy, and some do not have soap or toilet paper. Many streets of Paris are filthy and smell urine. So even though Cosmos does a fantastic job as a tour company, and I would recommend them highly, I would not recommend France as a destination. France is not what it used to be.
