I had one of these, now long gone and in some, but not all respects, I miss it very much.
I'm just adding my views partly based on memory, but also partly based on nostalgia for a time long gone.
This is the age of youngsters regarding MP3 (and other compressed formats) as "Hi-Fidelity", the iPod now rules supreme(???!!!), and streaming internet radio at 192kbps and downloads of poorly ripped and compressed music via a soundcard in a PC now dominates.
I loved the look, the silver finish, the dials, the facilities etc.
The sheer "presence".
It had buttons for everything, and specifically functions that so-called "pro-audio" reviewers frowned upon. - "Loudness" and a mono facility.. We now all know that defined deep bass is when low frequencies are "summed", a pity the Japanese (not only Sony, but Pioneer, Tosh et al) didn't follow that thru, low freq's summed, and everything over 150hz evenly balanced with even stereo separation.
I had a Sony CDP-101, purchased pre-owned in 1986. Regardless of mythology, it was a 16 bit machine with basic oversampling and a brickwall filter, but that distinct "early multibit bright" sound was a perfect match for the lushness of this behemoth of a receiver, yes it had "soggy" low frequencies, and yes it was band-limited, but partnered with the right digital source, it was magical.
The phono.... I was running a Realistic direct drive, with a budget Shure MM, nothing special and the filtering was of no benefit, but I loved it, all of it.
The way the Sansui G-9700 sounded partnered with my Wharefdale floorstanders, the way it all looked on a "modified" MFI stand....

Sansui G-9700, Wow!! My 7700 rocks. Imagine what the 9700 must sound like. Audio Authority amp switchers are a must if you want to consolidate multiple receivers/amps using one pair of speakers.
