My wife is not a tax-payer so we have always place substantial deposits in her name in fixed rate bonds and instant access. Because the instant access interest had fallen to a ridiculous 0.5% we decided to close it. Phoned the help line, enter customer number followed by hash, then enter certain PIN numbers followed by hash. Eventually speak to customer service. My wife gave her full name and address. Stated that our linked joint account was LloydsTsb. Was then asked for sort code and bank number. I gave the numbers because my wife did not have them to hand. "Sorry, your PIN is cancelled because your husband gave the numbers". "Prove who you are by sending bank statement or utility bill".My wife protested, we have a joint account with Lloyds Bank for over 50 years. With postal delays/strikes we are still trying to get access to our money. If the customer service person had asked for date of birth, mother's maiden name or memorable date that could have resolved the matter. We will never bank with ING again.
