After having cover with Halifax for nearly 20 years without ever having made a claim, in March 2008 two different pipes leading from our private water supply (a well) to our house burst on a very frosty night (-6 degrees). Halifax, (once they understood that people actually still HAVE private water supplies as they are not anywhere near the mains) sent out an assessor. He wandered up and down the pipeline for a few minutes, looked at the ground where the pipes lay and went away. Halifax refused to pay out saying it was natural wear and tear on metal pipes, claiming the assessor had done a number of tests to determine this. As I had accompanied him on his 'assessment,' he had done no such thing, and anyway, I told Halifax, it would be a bit difficult for the damage to have been done to metal pipes as the pies AREN'T metal - and the assessor would have discovered this if he had done the tests. We told Halifax we were contesting their decision and demanded another assessment by another company (they subcontract their assessment needs to another company). They refused, saying they had to take the word of the company they employed to do the assessments. It is now September 2008, and still no joy, altough we have officially complained to the Ombudsman regarding Halifax's poor response, which included making an assessment based on false information. I wouldn't inflict this lot on my worst enemy. We have cancelled our policy and gone elsewhere. In the meantime we are having to repair our water pipes using our savings. What an utter waste of space this company is.
