Rental cars have become prohibitively expensive in Vancouver this year. The cheapest I could find for this trip was $425 (Canadian) per week; at least 30 percent higher than last year. As I was completing the paperwork at the Thrifty desk at Vancouver International Airport, a rental agent told me I needed to get insurance at an additional $200 per week. I was reasonably sure it was optional, but she said if I didn't get it, I could pay up to $50,000 if anything happened to the car. I told her a Toyota Yaris didn't cost $50,000, and I called my insurance carrier. My carrier reviewed my policy and told me to decline the insurance. She suggested I was making a big mistake and told me I'd also have to pay for time the car was out of service, if anything happened to it. The car is fine, but I'm practically scared to drive it, and can't wait to turn it in. The car is fine, the price is awful but no worse than the others right now; but the true message here is the hard-sell tactics of the Thrifty/Dollar (same company) rental agent. I won't be using them again.
