I, unfortunately, due to laziness stayed with Direct Line Home Insurance for nine years, automatically renewing my policy each year. They start cheap and then the cost soars each year. I foolishly believed I was paying through the nose for top quality insurance. I came to make a claim in July which has just been settled. I found them totally obnoxious to say the least. I had a power cut over three days and claimed for F/F contents, they wouldnt pay engineer call out fees for alarm when back up power went.(£230)and directed me to my buildings insurer. The total claim for fridge and freezer was under £400 (less than I pay each year). it's taken six weeks of phone calls, letters, sending bank statements, letters from EDF and the outcome is, a cheque for £53. They deducted £150 excess and then went on to deduct a further £150 which I had received from EDF pwer by way of compensation. Although the £150 did not even cover the cost of the alarm engineer, nor the copious amounts of calls having to be made to 0845 numbers via a mobile (no power-no landline)or the rest of the uninvited expenses during the power cut, it did however pay something towards it. In the end, with both deductions, totalling £300 Directline Insurance paid me £53 for the contents of my fridge and freezer! I'm sure I spent that on phone calls chasing up the claim, preparing lists, sending bank statements (proof of food purchases)more phone calls. Talking to the people in their Glasgow call centre leaves you with the opinion that there is a running competion to see who can find what in the small print to reject as many claims as possible. They are down right arrogant. I wouldnt recommend them if they were the last insurance company trading! Potential customers beware!!!
