This was my first trip organized through Contours, although I have done several other independent walking holidays.

I cannot recommend highly enough inn to inn walking in England. On this trip, we walked about half of Hadrian's Wall path and the Dales Way. Both had outstanding scenery, and, to the credit of Contours, the inns arranged were comfortable and hospitable.
Our two biggest complaints:

1) Originally, we were to walk the Lake District. Contours advertises inn to inn walking. On their website, they state that "occasionally" transfers may be necessary. Although our Lake District walking was booked and paid for several months in advance, Contours booked us in a single accommodation and expected us to do taxi transfers to and from the trail every day. They never told us about this, and I only found when reviewing the trip materials that I was sent a few weeks before leaving.

This is why we switched to a different holiday. I must mention that this second holiday also contained a car transfer. (Which leads me to beleive that occasional transfers in their holidays is wishful thinking on their part) We were required to pay for this transfer ourselves. Again, this is my fourth holiday of this nature, and the first time I have ever encountered the need for a transfer.

2) We were traveling with a 10 year old child. I asked what discount could be provided off the full price, per person cost due to the fact that he could share a room with us. I was informed by Contours that the group discount was 5% regardless of the sleeping arrangements. Our ten year old, therefore, essentially paid the full adult price. However, in /every single inn/ he was placed in our room. Sometimes in a mattress on the floor. Contours managed to extract a 95% of a full adult fee (of over 50 pounds per night) to provide with accommodation that had we self booked cost 5 to 10 pounds per night (according to the innkeepers).
