I obtained an MBNA credit card some years ago with a low credit limit for internet and emergency use. I used the card occasionally and I cleared the balance each month by direct debit. In June MBNA terminated the account without notice and without reason. When I called the call centre to ask why it had been terminated I was initially told it had been cancelled because it had not been used for over 12 months. When I pointed out this was not the case I was told it was because it had not been used for 3 months. I then wrote to MBNA and after 2 months the reply stated that as it had not been used for 3 months "a decision was made to close your account for security purposes and in order to prevent fraudulent activity". This clearly makes no sense and I suspect the real reason was because the account was a low earner for MBNA. Either way this represents appalling customer service.
