Would never, ever, buy American Express traveller cheques again. My daughter lost hers; American Express, with a useless call centre in the Phillipines, offered no alternative other than a refund to our home address in four weeks time. Told me that they wouldn't send replacement cheques out. Spoke to someone else later who said they would send cash only out. spoke to someone even later who said they would maybe send traveller cheques, but maybe not. My daughter is in Europe so it shouldn't be a problem to arrange replacements. So something that should be easy to sort out is actually proving very problematic and negates the usefulness of taking traveller cheques in the fist place. Call centre dreadful. I was told today that American Express don't actually own the traveller cheque arm any more - maybe that's why the service is so bad.

Agree completely re useless American Express. My son had his travellers cheques stolen in France last week and although they validated his claim immediately, it was almost impossible for him to pick up new cheques. For 29 hours, he was sent around Post Offices and was ridiculed at every attempt to get his cheques, whilst I spent literally hours on the phone to AmEx.

After 29 hours, they told me it appeared they no longer had a relationship with La Poste (how could they not know???) and the best they could do was to send him money versus Western Union! When I ask if they would cover his money in case it got stolen, they said no and got very irritated when I asked why had I bothered to buy the chques in the first place if they couldn't offer the service they claimed?

In the end, my son and his father who had flown to Paris by this time to get things sorted had to get themselves to CDG airport where there are 8 AmEx offices now - but no other offices or partners elsewhere in France it seems.

Never ever again will we use American Express for anything...
