I have been banking with Alliance and Leicester for over 5 years now and originally took the account after previously holding accounts with the Halifax and HSBC (who I would never, ever go to again). All I wanted was a straight forward account that had easy internet banking and could be linked to a savings account.

This was solved by the Premier Current Account which automatically comes with a savings account linked in. I can use fast transfer to make my regular payments and can see all accounts I hold with A&L (including my cash ISA) without having more login details. The only downside I have had is a lack of branches but I presume now A&L are under Satander that soon I will be able to use Abbey and Santander branches. Whenever I have had to phone telephone banking they have been friendly and helpful even when I disputed a charge and when I was a victim of card fraud they stopped my card before I even knew about it and stopped the payment going through.

I think with any bank if you have financial problems then your bank may not be always able to help you and this can lead to very negative feedback but on the whole I have not had any of the problems I had at some of the Big 5 banks.
