I have had Sky Plus for a while now and while I haven't had any problems with the actual set-top box, I would have to say that I could quite easily have survived without the service.
IF you don't have Sky Movies or Sky Sports as part of your standard package and you're not a real sport nut then you would survive with you normal service.
I personally found the picture quality on most TV channels to be not that much better and even the HD channels such as BBC and FX although better don't massively change my viewing experience.
The other issue is the satellite dish seems to be hyper-sensitive (even more so since than my standard Sky dish had the same problem) to extremes of weather - either very hot or very stormy. The service just cuts out. Thank God my TV has built-in Freeview or I would be a lot more stressed out about it.
