I have just filled up my Audi A4 3.0s with Asda Unleaded Petrol from empty and exactly the same thing has happened. Almost immediately the engine started rattling and the car juddering, and a smell of burning coming out of the exhaust. The Emission Control System Warning Light came on, with instructions to take the car immediately to a garage.
I rang up the garage 10 minutes later, assuming they had put diesel in their Unleaded pump (I have the receipt to prove that I went for the unleaded). They said noone else had complained about the petrol so far, and it must have been a problem specifically with my car.
Later spoke to someone at BP, who explained that the supermarkets don't add any decent additives to their petrol and that you're getting the lowest quality stuff going. Definitely a false economy that I hope hasn't done any permanent damage to my engine. I'm never using Asda Petrol again, and would strongly advise anyone with a Sporty Car that takes unleaded to not go anywhere near Supermarket Petrol in future, despite what the stickers might say about it being ok...
