Booked the car on the avis car hire web, which suggested excess of £450 could be reduced to £200 by an additonal payment of about £4/day, subject to a maximum payment of 7 days. When we came to collect the car we were advised that this option did not exist, and that the excess was £800, and this could only be reduced by taking out comprehensivce insurance at an additonal cost of £16.50/day.

The attitude of the staff at the counter was that what the web said was nothing to do with them. The above were their terms - take it or leave it. I reluctantly paid for comprehensive insurance on the understanding that we would be reimbursed if we could demonstrate the web terms. I have written twice to Avis, sending copies of the web terms exactly as stated - and as of now, 6 weeks after my first letter, I have had no reply. I would NOT recommend this company to anyone
