As a male I joined match.com in 2007 to meet someone special in a new town. Navigating the site is easy, the "mutual matches" generally meet your basic requirements (as to age, height, smoker/non etc), and you can see how recently people have been on the site (probably no point in e-mailing someone who hasn't been on there for a month or more).
However it is impossible to determine who is a paying member or not - if you contact someone who isn't a member, they won't be able to reply. It's also hard to get a real picture of the person from the short description allowed on the site, when you often find out more about their favourite books and TV shows than the person themselves (this is the fault of Match for how they structure the questions they ask when you are completing your profile).
Nevertheless I sent messages to perhaps a couple of dozen ladies, got replies from more than half a dozen, and met two on dates. One of which worked out well and we have been together for the past two years. So overall, Match works for me...
