madvlam's Review of Sony HT-IS100

30th Jun 2009

Overall Rating

4 stars
  • Value for money
    3.5 stars
  • Sound Quality
    4 stars
  • Time Speakers Owned
    Less than a Week
  • Ease of Set Up
    4.5 stars
Good Points

1. Integrated solution (Amp + Sub)
2. Sound quality and surround effect good enough (at least for the size of my living room and for newbies like me!)
3. Auto calibration
4. Enough input (3xHDMI, 2xComponent, 3xoptical, 1xCoaxial - except RCA audio - just one!)
5. Good "out-of-the-box" experience (all accessories included - e.g. wall-mount kit for satellites, one optical cable, FM/AM antenna cable, auto-cal mic)

Bad Points

1. No video upscaling (only switching via HDMI - be careful, Sony called this "up-conversion" which is NOT upscaling at all!)
2. All connections at the bottom of the unit - very inconvenient
3. No headphone jack! (I think this is silly) - unless you go for S-AIR wireless
4. No HD audio decoder (DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD) - only LPCM7.1
5. No OSD (you need to look at the panel at the top - fortunately it faces 45 degrees towards you)

General Comments

Some say you get a lot by paying little when you go from 2.0 to 5.1 but you need to pay a lot to get just a little if you go from 5.1 to better 5.1 or 7.1

This is exactly what I felt after I bought this Sony HT-IS100 home theatre system - I am now a very happy man! :)
