I read the 3rd edition of R.D. Treloar, Plumbing: Heating and Gas Installations. It is a good guide to the basics of UK plumbing and gas work, explaining the principles of plumbing well, and covering stndard installations and regulations well. It does not do a good job of covered non-standard things like solar thermal and thermal stores/heat banks, but for conventional plumbing of the last 30 years it will tell you everything you need to know.
