Accessible, good presentation, attractive to children.
They only use the informal (tu, du etc.), so not so good if you are going to meet people in a formal setting.
Usborne publish these guides for a number of different languages (we have French, German, Italian, Spanish, Welsh and Latin). They all have the same format - cartoon style with bubbles, and can be purchased with cassette tapes to aid pronunciation. They are great for children to prepare for a foreign holiday, or for beginners of any age, although they are at quite a basic level - for example they do not tackle anything but the present tense. However, they offer a good foundation to build on.
