I was very excited about receiving my N97. When it arrived I feverishly opened the box and started playing with it.

The actual design was a little dissapointing, but more or less what I was expecting (Nokia arne't going to win any design awards vs their competitors.)

I thought the keyboard was OK, but not amazing. I thought the screen and touchscreen element were very good and some of the apps pretty impressive.

However, there were a lot of little bugs - eg it decided to delete my text inbox and sent box over night for some reason, the backlight doesnt always come on and every time i switch the phone on it tries to get me to set up my email account (which I've already done) and I have to cancel this each time.

However, I could just about live with these issues, on the assumption that they'd be fixed by the next software update.

What I can't live with though is the fact that even though it may say I've got a full signal, no-one can call or text me as it just goes straight through to voicemail. Comparing my old N95 with the N97 the N95 has a much better signal in exactly the same position (with the same operator) so I can only conclude that this is yet another bug, that although it has full signal calls/texts dont get through. Oddly enough, email's come through immediately without any problem.

Anyway, having a phone where you can't rely on messages getting through is a bit of a flaw, so I've decided to return mine and look at something like the iPhone 3GS.

So, the N97 is close but not quite there - I'd avoid it if I were you - at least for a few months until the software / hardware is actually sorted out

Reading on some forums, people are submitting a huge amount of bugs that they're finding with the N97 so it looks like its not just me.

Shame, I was so looking forward to a decent Nokia!
