I have flown with American Airlines for about 5 years now. In the past I would have rated them quite highly but in the past 2 years their whole service delivery has deteriorated considerably.
The aircraft are well past their upgrade date; staff are indifferent; delays (caused by absent pilots and plane faults) and inconvenience of a large scale is viewed as a tiresome norm and you get the distinct impression that no one can really be bothered to care.
In the past 7 months I have flown from London to Colombia, via RDU or MIA, on 4 occasions. On 3 occasions I was delayed overnight due to late departures of the first leg and missed transfers as a consequence. On each delay I ended up getting to my final destination about 24 hours late and totally fed up.
A disturbing trend of late is to offer $100 vouchers as compensation. There are conditions attached to acceptance written in the small print. In essence by acceptance you waive any right to further compensation and indemnify AA. These are handed to passengers who do not speak english and accept it in ignorance! When I translated the effect many then refused to accept it!
