I've used Actinic V7 for 4 years to run a large online shop / course booking system, turning over about 100,000GBP per annum.
Overall, I'd say that Actinic is impressive and good value as a relatively quick and easy solution for a small business. It can be a bit quirky but name me any other piece of software that isn't!
However, Actinic's main weakness in my view is that all the order processing has to be done from a single PC. That's the main reason why we're now migrating to another solution.
So I'd recommend it for a small online shop, but not for a big one where several different people have to process orders.
Updating the catalog also has to be done from a single PC, which is a limitation.
Most online shops are entirely web server based, but in Actinic the website/catalog html pages are generated on your PC then uploaded to your server. Orders are downloaded to the PC then processed on the PC. So Actinic is mainly a PC application that maintains an online catalog and processes downloaded orders. The database that runs everything is an Access file on the PC.
I've also set up a small shop with Actinic V8. This has some improved features but is still basically the same product so the above review still covers it pretty well. V8 has a new template design system built in which I found rather confusing and strange (as an ex web applications developer I'm more technical than most Actinic users would be).
