Good Points

The ship, the ports of call, the staff, the lectures, the food, portions so that after five weeks on board I had not gained weight! (OK, only a little.....)
Our captain, and his wonderful announcements. Always accessible, and he cured my fear of crossing the Drake passage by going out of his way to show me wave sizes!!!!!!!! (You had to be there!)

Bad Points

In the brochure it was very clear that one must be fit and able to go on the Zodiacs and walk on Antarctica. In practice and in my opinion, some passengers were most obviously not, which slowed everything down, and in one case, a women struggling with walking with her stick on rough terrain (hello this is Antarctica?) fell and broke her wrist. I am surprised there were not more casualties.
Decor of our room most disappointing.

General Comments

From details and opinions posted on the Internet we had very low expectations for this cruise (Lisbon to Antarctica) but where happy to "give it a go" for the destinations of South America and Antarctica. We were pleasantly surprised by the decor of the ship, though very disappointed at the decor of our cabin, a junior suite, it was functional however we saw superior cabins of a lower grade that were far more nicely appointed with art on all walls and matching curtains etc. Our decor was very brown early 1970's motel feel.
On all other aspects this cruise was outstanding. The quality of the entertainment, lectures, food and classes went beyond our expectations. Without the crew, this would amount to little, it was their attention to detail, their cheery disposition and unwavering sense of duty, each in his/her own way going the extra mile, special mention for one member of staff, who in his calm steady manner was the most meticulous and engaging waiter. The bar staff had a great sense of humour and were never more than a wink away when a drink was required.
This was an unforgettable cruise made very special by the ports of call, and fellow passengers. If it is discos and wall climbing you want, this is not the cruise for you. Yes there is a disco, but we were so busy with everything else on offer, we never made it!
Mention has been made of flight problems, we upgraded and were glad that we did, sadly the strike by the airline was out of the remit of the cruise company, and did cause problems. Looking back now, all I remember is the good times, the laughter, and the beautiful sights seen. A fantastic cruise onboard the MV Discovery with Voyages of Discovery.
