Terrible customer service - certainly not in line with the rest of the breakdown industry.


General Comments

I am not an RAC customer but unfortunately had to use them recently as my hire car broke down and they had the contract with them. Our car broke down in the country side, moreorless in the middle of nowhere. We didnt have a phone reception and the hire car didnt have the breakdown details so a friendly passing motorist gave us a lift to the nearest town and we went back to the hotel to get the breakdown details. So we then phoned RAC and the fun started. They told us they wouldnt go and collect the car unless we were with the car. Okay, no problem we said, can we be picked up at our hotel please and taken to the car. No they said, you have to make your way there yourself. This would have cost us over £60 in taxi fare one way. They said it wasnt their problem. I ask if we do this can we then get dropped off back at the hotel. They say they cant guarantee that as it depends where the RAC driver is headed after that. I have never heard of a breakdown company that doesnt take the driver to where they are headed. So now we are looking at over £100 in taxi costs to get there and back. I ask to speak to the RAC employee's manager and boy what an attitude this guy has. We discuss the issue back and forth for a bit, I ask him if he thinks this is good customer service, his reply "It doesnt matter, its the service we provide". Unbelievable. We both start talking at the same time and he gets very annoyed saying "Dont shush me Mister, dont shush me, let me finish". I didnt "shush him", we both just started talking at the same time. So in a nutshell huge chips on their shoulders and appalling customer service.
