Bad Points
Dreadful telephone support. When you know more about the problem than the person supposed to assist you, there's something wrong. They force you to follow their script, that's their only game. DNS servers are unreliable. Subscribe to free ones elsewhere instead. Don't install their invasive software, it will most likely break some other programs, especially if you use it on a laptop that you also use with a 3G mobile broadband service. Bandwidth throttling is imposed on you automatically if you use Bittorrent peer-to-peer file sharing. This is harsh if you are a Linux fan sharing and downloading Linux distrubutions but is probably Virgin Media responding to pressure from the music and film industries.
General Comments
Great for basic Internet access, don't go near Virgin Media invasive software! We took NTL broadband as soon as it was available. After the nightmare of hugely expensive BT Home Highway (ISDN) followed by completely broken ADSL, cable broadband was pure bliss and remains so 5+ years on. Virgin Media's price plans bundled broadband with other services are good value.
Very reliable fibre optic network except the last hop from the street cabinet to your property. The speed you pay for is assured. Regular bandwidth upgrades within the price plan you subscribe to. We started on 640Kbps, now have 10Mbps at the same price.
