Good Points

very few inherited conditions in this breed.
Very beautiful, sociable and affectionate. Easy to train if you use food as a positive reinforcement (reward). Fantastic recall unless distracted by play.
Very sociable with other dogs, people including strangers and children.

Bad Points

He does pull on the collar lead at times, which is not good for beagles who have a more delicate larynx than other dogs. It has resulted in him developing a temporary cough.
He thinks that couples dining on romantic picnics in the park are merely waiters on hand to serve him free food! It has been a bit embarrassing when he's run in and stolen sandwiches in the past.
Prone to gastroenteritis as they eat all sorts of yukky stuff off the floor.

General Comments

Benson is our one year old male beagle. He is the centre of our family and our perfect dog! We have been able to walk him off the lead in open spaces since he was 10/11 weeks old and his recall is always immediate and consistent unless he's playing with another dog (in which case i cannot blame him.) Whilst he does love to smell everything, he has never tracked a scent and disappeared. He loves children and is happy to be stroked and tickled even if the children are a little rough with him. He is the most sociable dog in our area, wanting to play with every dog he meets (it's the pack hound in him i guess) He also has an exceptional memory for people and dogs he likes and always greets them with an excited squeak. He is extremely intelligent and was very easy to train too. I learned early on that Beagles are particularly motivated by food which enabled me to teach him a wide variety of new skills and tricks. Having owned two different breeds of dogs in the past i would only ever own beagles now!
