I bought my Rover 214 SEi 16V as a first car, it was second hand and had really high milage on it, but it cost £110 and it was only ever supposed to be an "interim" car while i saved up for a "decent" one. That was 4 years ago, and ive never been inspired to replace it. Ive driven it daily for the last 4 years, and although there are things which have gone wrong with it, its been incredibly cheap to repair (as breakers yards always seem to have parts in good nick for that model of rover). Quite prone to battery issues(if not driven frequently) and I have had to relpace the power steering rack on mine, but even that only cost £70 to replace and fit!
Its remarkably fast off the mark for an old car and it is the sturdiest and safest car i've ever driven. (t the beginning of this year, i was run into by a HGV, which pulled into the side of the rover and then rammed it from the back several times. I honestly expected the car to have been a write off, but when i got out to inspect it, the only damage was some scratches and paint transfer!!)I would strongly recommend that anyone who is looking for a first car buys one, great on fuel consumption, cheap to tax and MOT and even with high milage, they just keep going!
