Good Points

They have shiny planes. They are generally (at least for the typical flight I take) on time.


Bad Points

General Comments

American is not up front about hidden fees. For example, there is nothing obvious after a good deal of search online that indicates they will cancel your reservation if you do not show up for the first leg of the trip. Doing so requires a change fee of $150.

Secondly, they are less than up front about restrictions on travel vouchers. They promise that you can use them for future travel when offering them, but just try to use them. There are many, many, many restrictions they don't bother mentioning at the gate, and they make them very difficult to use by requiring you to hold reservations and then making a trip to the airport to actually redeem the vouchers. If you try to avoid this by booking over the phone, they deduct $20 for each reservation.

Finally, their international service is horrible. Pay, pay, pay for every in-flight service. The European carriers don't do this. My advice for international is avoid all the American carriers and fly the international carriers.
